It’s been a crazy few weeks – thus the lack of posting here. Sorry ’bout that. On July 2nd, Husband got word to go to Resource. In shipyard land, this is code for, “You’re going to work somewhere else for a while.” And then while walking to Resource the employee gets to envision him/herself in Japan, Norfolk, Hawaii, San Diego. You can probably guess which destination(s) is(are) most desired. Husband got down to Resource and was told to pack his bags – he just won a trip to San Diego!
For him, this meant flying out on Monday after spending the Fourth of July weekend doing five weekends worth of yard work and house maintenance. For me, this meant spending a week trying to eat through four months of food in the house (don’t worry, I gave up and donated most of it), calling utilities to shut everything down, cleaning the house, running errands, taking the dogs to the vet, going to the dentist, calling Navy pharmacy, packing, unpacking, repacking, getting together with friends for the last time for five months, returning borrowed stuff, figuring out which knitting projects to take (this is very time intensive), mourning the stash I had to leave behind, forwarding the mail, and trying to maintain some sanity while simultaneously imagining myself living in a city of 3 million people. In an apartment. With the dogs.
I didn’t sleep much that week and I haven’t slept much since I’ve arrived in San Diego. Thank God I packed the coffee grinder. It really does make all the difference. I do wish I had packed the coffee maker. And some more clothes. And some more yarn.
The apartment is nice in that it is big – a 2 bedroom, 2 bath. The bedrooms are roomy. It’s 1092 square feet! It’s also centrally located. Everything seems to be within a 15-20 minute drive. Yesterday we went to the NEX and Commissary and it was only 10 minutes away. The Commissary is the nicest and biggest I have ever seen. Ditto on the NEX.
We also went to Petco yesterday. When we tried to leave the apartment to go to the commissary, the dogs yelped, howled and cried so loudly that we heard them by the elevator so we ran back to the apartment and put them in the kitchen with the doggie gate up, scolded them with “no bark!” Again we left. Again we heard the sad, sad howling that says, “I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU ARE LEAVING US HERE IN THIS STRANGE PLACE! YOU ARE PROBABLY NEVER COMING BACK AND WE WILL BE STUCK HERE FOREVER! YOU DO NOT LOVE US ANYMORE. WE WANT NEW OWNERS! This time we came back in and scolded them. But now they know that when we leave, if they howl, we’ll just come back. It took us an hour to actually get out of the house and by then I had a headache that wouldn’t quit, I was starving, and on the brink of tears. Also, I had two dogs in the backseat.
Husband thought that kenneling them might help. I was not so sure. But we spent $50 on yet another plastic box, brought it back to the apartment after getting a bite at a place where we could eat outside and have people walking by go, “Awwww, cute puppies!” to which I wanted to say, “You don’t know what you’re talking about,” and then off to the commissary we went.
When we got back there was no nasty note on our door and the doggies were huddled up in the kennel, asleep. I think it’s going to work. Of course, I can’t be gone for long periods of time because we got a smaller crate. But hey, at least I can go to the grocery without worrying that they’re going to get us kicked out of the apartment.
I’ve been getting up with Husband (4:45am) to take the dogs out so that he doesn’t have to, but I’ve also been still going to sleep between 11:30pm and 1am. That’s not making me very friendly. Once awake I can’t get back to sleep. That’s got to change soon.
San Diego is nice. I haven’t been anywhere fun yet, but I am looking forward to going to the Meditation Garden, the Gas Lamp District, The Upstart Crow, and the knitting stores in the area. I’m not really a beach person, but I’m sure I’ll spend some time at the beaches. And I can’t wait to go to Sea World. It’s going to take some getting used to, but I think it’s going to be good once I settle in and get into a routine. There’s a pool that I can see from my 3rd story apartment that’s calling my name.
So thank you for being patient with me while I transitioned. Hopefully I’ll be posting with more regularity now. Have a good Monday.

good to see this
Wish I could go explore San Diego with you – sounds fun! Good luck with the puppies.
It was sure nice talking to you the other day!
BTW I signed up for Ravelry so I’m just waiting for my invitation
I’m hoping to take a local knitting vs crochet class to see which one I want to learn. I’m excited to get going on it! YAHOO!
Then we can talk yarn all day. j/k
Glad to hear things are going “well”. I can’t wait to come see you. I will look up Jack’s schedule and try to come out sooner rather then later, or I may not make it. Give me a call if you do head over to hell next week. I think you may be going to. Jack starts school and I am a free woman again
Well at least for 3 1/2 more months. Love ya.
My xMIL adores Balboa Park. There are like a zillion places to go there and we used to just pack a picnic and a book and chill in the international area and/or under a tree at least once every visit.
You know, just in case you don’t have enough on your list of things to do and places to visit
.
There’s no place like home…but, it sounds like you’re trying to make the best of it. Plan on going to those places you want to see. Mark it down on your calendar for you and Husband to see something this month and another thing next month. On weekends, take a leisurely drive, smell the ocean, take the dogs to the park and visit that pool you have. Prioritize what’s important to you and then do it. You’ll be glad you did!
