My husband’s family is (mostly) from Illinois. We’ve only been back twice in the nine years we’ve been married. For some reason I thought it was more like 3 or 4 times, so when DH told me, “Nope, just twice,” I felt really badly about that. It’s not my fault, but we have gone back to Arizona a gazillion times. I think it has something to do with the fact that I’m a daughter and women are drawn back to their families and childhoods moreso than men are. I could be wrong.
So we are driving to Illinois late this month, after my birthday. Yep, driving. Three days to get there, three days spent with the family, three days to get back home. On the way to Illinois, we’ll be stopping in Nebraska to see one of DH’s old friends who used to live up here, but moved down to where he grew up. He just had a baby a few months ago. It will be nice to see him too and meet his baby.
I’m bringing my camera and laptop, hoping to get a chance to journal about it at night in our motel room. It’s entirely possible that I’ll just zone out in front of the television for twenty minutes before falling asleep though after all that driving. So don’t be surprised if I’m not posting for those nine days. DH and I have not taken a long distance driving trip together before. I think it will be nice, three days of talking or just being quiet, together. We get along really well. We’re lucky that way. Actually, no, we’re not lucky, we work really hard at our relationship.
Fortunately, we have someone great staying at the house and watching the dogs for us while we’re away. It’s a blessing that we won’t have to worry about that while we’re gone. And when I come back, I have some things I need to get in order – like getting ready for my business’ launching special, finding out if we’re going to San Diego, getting involved in figuring out how Kitsap County is helping the homeless. I want to do some home improvement projects too, this summer. It’s going to be another year that will zip on by more quickly than the one before it. I just hope the summer months go by slowly. I need that sunshine!
In the meantime, my goal is to finish the Debbie Bliss picot dress for my niece and get it mailed before we leave on the trip. I’ll post a picture of the final product before I mail it off.
